Warhol Goop

For Abstract Art class, last Tuesday, we were shown how other people had made their own versions of classic art pieces. How works had been made based on previous works and turned into styles like Cubist, Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist, or simply their own interpretation. I've certainly done enough of that. Look through this blog and you'll see my versions of works based on Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, Alex Calder and others. Also, how many versions of classic works like the Statue of Liberty and Mona Lisa have we seen. Did you ever see the fat Mona Lisa?
But, I have never done a stab at Warhol before, so I give you a can of Warhol Vegtable Goop, done with acrylic paint on 8" X 10" canvas board.

The Raven

Made with 8" X 10" canvas panel, acrylic paint, cut paper raven images
found on internet, printed with MS Word, cut out and glued on

This was made for a homework assignment for Abstract Art class. The assignment was to find or write a poem, then make an abstract art piece based on it.

The only poem I know well is The Raven, by
E A Poe. It's a very morbid poem about mourning. I then had to figure out how to represent morbidity in paint. Then it occurred to me that Mark Rothko had already done this. He had committed suicide and you can see this morbidity in his later work. I simply had to make a piece based on his work and add the ravens.

Apple

I've started taking a wax encaustic painting class again, at the Osher Lifelong Learning Center, at the University of Delaware. I tried taking it last year, but had to quit, due to scheduling conflict. We're studying it under Ms Cesarine, using her book,

Waxing & Waning: the Art of Mediatative Painting, by Petra Cesarine

It's done with a canvas board, an old magazine page, tempera paint, the first time I ever used such paint, gesso, wax paper and a two inch brush.

Apply gesso to the board, then cover it with the magazine page and cover that with gesso. You then apply your wax paper to that mess. eventually you can remove the wax paper and the wax will stick and you can begin painting. It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the basic.

So far, under her direction, I made this apple, which I'm rather proud of. I think it looks pretty good.

Town on Hill

I
This piece was done on a 10" square canvas with acrylic paint, is my first attempt at a landscape. I'm very proud of this piece, among the best I've ever done. I even got the shadows right, on the left side of the buildings and hill. I thought of giving the buildings more color, like real life, but I like them a bit drab. My only real concern was, was the picture taken with my shaky hands too blurry? It now hangs in my doctor's office.

Imitation Mark Rothko, December 5, 2018

I was inspired by Mark Rothko's work and made a few imitations which you can see at
daru3-davidart.blogspot.com/2015/11/rothko-file.html

I did some research if him later, and, if you know Mark Rothko's work, you can see that his suicide was coming, so I decided to try another version of his style, Hopefully, a happier version, below:

So, how does this make you feel?
